ROOT CANAL THERAPY
Are you worried about an upcoming root canal therapy appointment? Despite what you may have heard, the procedure is simple and straightforward. It does not cause pain, but instead, works to alleviate existing pain and also saves a tooth that may otherwise need extraction. At BMC Family Dentistry, we have options available to you to help reduce any anxiety. We are committed to delivering quality care in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
Do You Need Root Canal Therapy?
You may require root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy if the nerve or pulp of a tooth is inflamed and infected due to decay, a crack, fracture, or injury. If left untreated, your infected tooth can cause complications including severe pain, swelling, an abscess, or bone loss around the tooth root.
Signs that you may need root canal therapy include pain, swelling, sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness, discoloration of the tooth, or the presence of an abscess which usually looks like a bump or a pimple on your gums. Sometimes, however, there are no symptoms, so it is essential to keep up with your regular dental checkups every six months so that we can catch and treat any condition before it progresses.
What Are the Benefits?
Root canal therapy has many benefits. This virtually painless procedure not only relieves you of existing pain but also prevents many potential problems down the road. This treatment will potentially save your tooth, allowing you to maintain its full function and appearance. You’ll eat anything you like and smile with confidence. With proper care, most teeth that have had root canal therapy can last a lifetime!
What Is the Procedure?
First, we will numb the area and provide sedation as needed for your comfort. Dr. Nisbeth will remove the tooth decay along with the inflamed tooth pulp; then he will clean and disinfect the area before sealing the roots. After your root canal therapy, you will need to return to our office to prepare your tooth for a dental crown that will work to protect your tooth and restore it to its full form and function.
