Dental Crowns and Bridges Explained
Dental crowns, sometimes known as caps, are types of restorations which encase teeth completely. They are often used to strengthen or improve the appearance of teeth that are discolored, misshapen, fractured, chipped, or damaged, and protect teeth that have undergone root canal treatments. They are also used to cover dental implants to replace missing teeth and to help secure and connect dental bridges.
Dental bridges are oral devices used to restore one or more missing teeth. They are attached to crowns on natural teeth or implants on each side of the gap. Bridges are color and texture matched to your existing teeth, leaving you with a natural smile.
What Are the Benefits of Crowns and Bridges?
Dental crowns and bridges offer many benefits. They help restore or strengthen damaged or missing teeth, along with improving the appearance, shape or alignment of a tooth. They also help restore your ability to chew and speak properly and help maintain your facial shape and structure.
Bridges and crowns can prevent a bad bite by stopping teeth drifting out of position. That condition can cause many different problems including gum disease, a painful condition known as a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), and more.
What Should You Expect?
Getting a Crown: We will start preparing your tooth by filing it down. We will take an impression of your teeth to send to a dental laboratory that will make your crown. We will place a temporary restoration, and during a follow-up appointment, we will cement your permanent crown in place, leaving you with a natural looking and feeling restoration.
Getting a Bridge: We will first place dental crowns on teeth or implants neighboring the gap left by missing teeth to act as anchors for your dental bridge. Next, we will make impressions of your mouth to serve as a model. We will fit you with a temporary bridge while your final one is being made. During an upcoming visit, we will place your bridge and adjust it as necessary for a proper fit. Once cemented into place, your new bridge will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth!
